From my own experience, I have attended quite a number of run for at least 10 years from 5km to ultra marathon. I have used different types of ointment. This is one of the best which I would recommend. A few days before the marathon, I would start to apply this on my back, knee cap and ankle. On the day of the event and even after the event, I will still apply for a few days.
